Hand, over hand

So far today:

.Two scrambled eggs
.Three sausage links with syrup
.about 1/2 cup cooked hash browns
.one coffee with one refill (two sugars, one cream)

My divorcing friend and I went out for brunch today. This happens occasionally, but not terribly often. We both have diet issues - and no, not the kind that has a name such as "south beach" but diet, as in what a person eats in a day. One of us indulges in food more than she ought to and the other indulges half as often as she ought to. Yep, we're the equivalent pair to Jack Sprat and his wife. ...'course, that would mean one of us is a guy...uhmmm. Hm.

Anyhoo, we've decided that we have to work together since we've been doing the same damn things to ourselves for years now, watching each other - one getting huge, the other slowly fading away.

What's funny is that when we go out to eat together, we present to each other our best behaviors. Ms. Jack orders a large entree and works hard to get through it while Ms. Sprat does her best to leave a little something on her plate, even if she's ordered a smaller entree by comparison.

What we are counting on is a balance between the two of us. There is a middle ground, and both of us should be much closer to it, weight-wise, than either of us currently is (are? -no...).

To give an analogy, it's like there's a red-zone on a rope with both ends draped over cliffs. She's on her end, I'm on mine, and we're going to try to hold that rope steady as we climb up to the surface, near that red zone, with only each other to keep from falling. And with (mostly) only each other to cheer us on.

So, we've decided to send each other food journals every night. It presents us an opportunity to hold ourselves accountable to someone that is not just a little, chastising voice in our own heads. Not to mention, anyone that's ever kept a food journal knows that writing down the stuff you've eaten in a day is unbelievably eye-opening. There is suddenly no way to avoid the truth of what you're doing to yourself with (or without, as the case may be) food.

Somehow, I'm not super eager. Brunch was only this morning and I'm already dreading that email to send... Wish me luck?

Did I ever mention what a great friend she is?
